Cranleigh Dash to Hell and Back

Congratulations to Laurence, Gareth and Karen, who collapsed across the finish line of Hellrunner Hell Down South last weekend, after dragging their sorry bodies across 11 miles of muddy, rocky, wet and boggy terrain at Longmoor Military Training Camp to raise funds for Oakleaf Enterprise charity.

Whilst the running style of each of our heroes may have varied from “sluggish” to “sprightly”, it was hard to tell them apart at the finish line as each was gloriously covered in mud and smiles!

The highlight of the run (and that’s meant ironically!) was undoubtedly the Bog of Doom, a freezing chest-high slick of sludge. The only good thing about that was getting out at the end.

Of course, the point of all this was to raise money for Oakleaf, and we’re delighted to have raised £785 so far. We’re still some way off our target, though, so please donate what you can to raise money for this fantastic cause.

Oakleaf support those recovering from mental illness, not only in facilitating the recovery of those who have suffered from mental illness, but in educating the wider public about mental illness and overcoming the negative attitudes individuals often encounter when seeking to get back to work.

You can learn more about Oakleaf by visiting their website: http://www.oakleaf-enterprise.org/

Please donate today.

Thank you.

The Electric Car moves ever closer

Continued developments in the electric car industry have seen seven of the major car manufacturers take steps towards adopting a standardised charging system. Audi, BMW, Daimler, Ford, General Motors, Porsche and Volkswagen have all signed up to the scheme.

With continued R&D and investment being seen in the areas of battery & fuel cell technology the move by the major car manufacturers is key in demonstrating the wide held belief that electricity will be the answer to the declining levels of global oil resources.

MPs warn of “schizophrenia” over climate change targets

The government's "schizophrenic attitude" to climate change is undermining investor confidence in low-carbon industries, MPs have warned.

The UK is committed to cutting emissions in half by 2025 but has said it will review that goal in 2014.

Climate Change Minister Greg Barker said a review was needed to ensure UK industry was not losing out by cutting much faster than the rest of Europe.

But the Environmental Audit Committee warned against sending mixed messages.

David Cameron says he wants his to be "the greenest government ever", but last week Chancellor George Osborne sparked anger among environmentalists when he told the Conservative Party conference the UK would cut emissions no faster than others in Europe, and environmental measures would not be taken at the expense of British business.

Earlier this year, the government signed up to the fourth in a series of tough "carbon budgets" - for the period 2023 to 2027.

Labour MP and committee chairwoman Joan Walley said the move suggested the UK really was determined to switch to a greener economy.

"Unfortunately, the government's somewhat schizophrenic attitude to climate change seems to be undermining that confidence," she said.

Economic Growth to be stimulated by Science

It was encouraging to hear the Chancellor’s latest enouncement at the 2011 Conservative Party Conference that the beleaguered UK economy could be helped on the path to recovery partly through increased financial stimulus to the UK’s science industry. Indeed the Chancellor, whilst recognising that cuts and efficiency drives would be necessary in other areas of the economy and governmental spending, outlined that £200 million would be set aside for the UK’s Science industry. http://tgr.ph/oO1pFl

Let’s hope that the coalition government continue to recognise the important part that science can play in helping the UK towards economic recovery, and in particular the need to retain the standard of excellence that the UK holds with regards to global scientific Research & Development.

The Carbon Trust claims Britains multinational companies value green suppliers

A study completed by the Carbon Trust Advisory analysing 100 senior managers, found the UKs business leaders are engaging with carbon reduction, to the point where they would drop suppliers based on poor carbon performance. Over half – 58% - of the UK managers questioned said they would deselect supplier on that basis. This compares well with those questioned in the US, where just 28% of managers said they considered carbon reduction important enough to dictate supplier strategy.

Promisingly, 74% of UK managers said shareholder pressure would be a key driver for tackling carbon emissions, clearly a positive indication the country is beginning to take carbon reduction seriously.

New Science Bristol & Bath Science Park Opens!

The recent opening of the Bristol & Bath Science Park is welcome news to the UK Science industry and highlights the coalition government’s belief that the economy can benefit substantially from continued investment in the sector.

The park has a strong academic link with the universities of Bath, Bristol and the West of England the sites main stakeholders. The hope will surely be that the Park can build on these close ties to help drive forward scientific research, development and innovation in the same way that for example the Surrey, Cambridge and Oxford Science parks have done.

In times of continued job cuts and increasingly gloomy economic predictions, the Science Park will also bring with it the creation of up to 6,000 new jobs.

For further information on the Bristol & Bath Science Park please view: http://www.bbsp.co.uk/

Renewable Energy reaches new heights in the UK - but we still have a long way to go!

The second quarter of 2011 saw renewable energy contribution rise to nearly 10% of the UKs electricity supply. Total contribution by green generators rose 50% on last year to 7.86TWh (Terawatt Hours).

Statistics released last Thursday by the Department of Energy and Climate Change have revealed the wind sector leads the way on growth figures, with 120% output rise year on year, followed by Hydroelectricity, with 75%.

Contributing factors to this surge are the steady increase in capacity of offshore wind farms and biomass power plants; however weather conditions have also helped, with low wind generation in Q2 2010, combined with a low energy drain in 2011 due to the mild spring.

The UK still lags behind the leading green nations in Europe. Germany recorded 20.8% renewable contribution to their total electricity supply in the first two quarters of 2011. The difference? Heavy investment in the sector is clearly a leading contributor. Germanys private sector invested 26 billion Euro into their Renewable Sectors in 2010, in contrast the UK invested 3.3bn euros (£2.1bn).

The Agency Workers Regulations (AWR) - Effective October 1st 2011

The Agency Workers Regulations (AWR) come into force on October 1st 2011 and will impact upon every business that engages temporary workers in the UK.

From 1st October 2011 agency workers will be entitled to new rights under the AWR and these Regulations acknowledge the role of temporary workers in the labour market and the vital contribution they make to the UK economy. Temporary workers provide a flexible workforce, allowing businesses to meet short term skills shortages, continuity during planned absences, project delivery deadlines and seasonal demands.

So what will this mean in reality ?

The purpose of the Regulations is toprovide agency workers the entitlement to the same basic employment and working conditions as if they had been recruited directly, if and when they complete a qualifying period of 12 weeks in the same job. Agency workers will also be entitled to access to facilities and information on job vacancies from Day 1 of their assignment.

As cranleigh is a specialist provider of temporary and contract staff we have taken the time to understand this legislation and our aim is to inform and consult with our clients to ensure they are compliant, ready and prepared for the arrival of the AWR on 1st October 2011.

We have produced a factsheet on the Regulations to download and in addition guidance notes have been published by BIS that are available on their website: BIS Guidelines on AWR.

The introduction of the AWR will mean that hirers of temporary workers will need to work with trusted recruitment partners who can support them in managing compliance. Cranleigh has a dedicated compliance manager for the AWR as well as access to a team of legal experts. We will be pleased to assist you in understanding and assessing what impact, if any, the AWR may have on your business and can discuss the options with you as well as offering "impact assessments" at your premises.
